Therapy of chronic wasting

The enormous weight loss that is associated with HIV in advanced stages continues to
represent an important psychological and physical problem, that limits social interactions
and reduces life quality of affected individuals.
A trial with "oxymetholone", a derivative of testosterone, demonstrated the accrual
of body cell mass in wasted patients. Following this success, the effects of this anabolic
drug are currently being studied with respect to body composition
(muscle, fat and water) in 100 patients.
The goal remains to fight wasting and body fat redistribution
(e.g. crix-belly, buffalo-hump, and slim-cheeks).
